VOCABULARY A-H

Advantage
Following a foul the referee allows the team fouled against a chance to continue play with the ball. If they can’t do anything ‘positive’ the referee takes the ball back to the point of foul and awards a penalty.

Ankle tap
A defender taps a fast moving attacker on the ankle from behind with his boot, causing the attacker to stumble and fall.

Binding
A player in the Scrum uses his whole arm to grasp a teammate at the armpits, to leave no gaps and the players then push against each other to lock the scrum together.

Blindside
The area between the ball and the closest Sideline.

Blood bin
If a player is bleeding or has an open wound he must immediately be taken off pitch to the blood bin. A blood replacement stands in until his bleeding has stopped and he can return to play.

Bomb
A high kick ball usually sent to the opposition in the intention they will drop it. Fullbacks usually take the brunt and practice their glue-like catches.

Box kick
The same as a bomb but a high kick aimed at a Winger.

Breakdown
When play stops and both teams are questioning possession of the ball following a tackle or drop ball. Nothing to do with a player questioning his direction in life.

Chip kick
A short kick, chipped over the opposition defence line with the intention of possession retrieval.

Dead
When the ball is out of play. Either by going Into touch or the referee blowing his whistle for stoppage.

Dive pass
A longer pass, usually carried out by more agile players, achieved by diving towards the player to whom the pass is intended for.

Dodge
A player will quickly move to one side to avoid being tackled. Also known as a sidestep.

Drawing the man
Luring the opposition into attacking with a Tackle just before passing the ball. Resulting in a Late charge.

Drop kick
The ball is kicked as it is dropped and hits the ground, a technically difficult kick with limited range.

Feed
When the Scrum-Half places the ball into the scrum.

Flick pass
When the ball is passed quickly to a teammate with a flick of the wrists. Usually done with one hand while the other is used to fend off an opponent.

Garryowen
See bomb. Named in honour of the great Irish team of the 1920s.

Goose step
A quick step and rapid change in pace and direction with locked knees and straight legs to trick the opposition. Made famous by David Campese.

Grubber kick
A low kick along the ground used by the attacking team, usually close to the opponent’s . Due to the shape of the ball it can bounce unpredictably.

Hand-off
A player fends off would be tacklers with a straight arm and flat palm. For the action to be legal, the defender’s arm must be straight before contact is made and contact must be below the shoulder line.

High tackle
An illegal Tackle made above the shoulder line which results in a yellow or red card.

Hit and spin
A player with possession of the ball is facing a Tackle and manages to spin himself out of before being taken down.

Hospital pass
A badly judged pass that can result in the recipient taking a trip in an ambulance as he and the opposition head for the ball at the same place at the same time.

Lob pass
A high pass that gracefully loops over the heads of the gawping opposition.

Loitering
When a player loiters offside with intent of the opposition making a mistake so that he might score a glory breakaway try.

Loop
A player runs around his teammate with the intention of a pass back to him.

Man-on-man defence
An attacker takes on the man directly opposite him in a defence move.

Mark
A defending player catches the ball from an oppositions kick (but not kick off) and shouts ‘mark’. He gets a free kick.

Offload
A player throws/passes (offloads) the ball at the moment he is tackled by another player.

Pick-and-go
Following a tackle and the ball is on the ground a player picks the ball and runs forward on attack.

Punt kick
Unlike the drop kick the ball is kicked before it hits the ground and a much easier kick to execute. Usually the Fly-Half, Scrum-Half or Fullback will take most of the punt kicks.

Pushover try
During a Scrum when the attacking team successfully push their opposition backwards over the try line to score.

Restart
A kick to restart play either after points have been scored or at the beginning of the second half of play.

Scissors pass
A pass involving a quick change of direction. The teammate waiting for the ball will cut behind the player passing the ball who pivots to pass. Aimed to confuse the opposition.

Screw punt
A punt kick which twists in the air to go further.

Shove
During a scrum when the attacking team use all their might to push the opposition backwards.

Side-on tackle
A tackle made from the side a player runs through two players of the opposition.

Sidestep
Same as a dodge. A player steps to one side to avoid a Tackle.

Sin bin
The rugby equivalent of the naughty step. Where players are sent to cool their heels for 10 minutes after repeated pushing of the rules before breaking.

Spiral pass
A player puts spin on the ball to make it go faster and further.

Stationary tackle
A player in possession of the ball runs straight at a stationery defender. The defender holds on tightly to the ball carrier and uses their own momentum against them, causing the ball carrier to topple forwards.

Stiff arm tackle
An attacker uses their straight arm to stop the opposition. Can be a nasty move.

Swerve
The player in possession of the ball waits for the opposition to commit to their tackle and then swerves at the last minute.

Throw-in
When a Hooker throws the ball into the Lineout.

Wheel
When a scrum rotates in either direction by more than 90 degrees.

Willie away
A player executes a perfect peel away from a lineout to receive the ball. Named after Wilson Whineray, captain of the All Blacks in the 1960s.

Wooden spoon
A team that loses all of its games in the Six Nations Championship gets the wooden spoon.
